Tobacco and alcohol has played a major role in some peoples’ lives, and is very harmful if not used properly.  Recent studies have showed that more deaths, illnesses and disabilities can be attributed to substance abuse than any other preventable health condition.  On averages, there are about 100,000 deaths per year, with alcohol related problems and about $220 billion spent per year on alcohol products. Along with that the tobacco use is worse than ever before. There have been about 430,000 deaths per years, with just over $157 billion spent per year.

The leading factors that lead to smoking and alcohol consumption is all a matter of choice. Depending on who you are around and if you environment plays a negitive effect on you, this is called a RISK FACTOR. In other words it increase your chances of a certain action. If you live in a healthy community, and you don't have a lot of peer pressure, this is called your PROTECTIVE FACTORS, because it lowers the probility of you smoking or drinking.

These TWO factors can be either genetic (inherited) or an environmental problem such as (one's home, family, life, school, peer groups & culture).

The reason why I choose to reaserach more on smoking and alcohol, is because in our community we live in, we are surrounded by it everyday, and being on a college campus puts a higher risk factor on each and every one of us. Secondly, my father has smoked his whole life, and last year my 49 year old uncle passed away from sclerosis of the liver from drinking almost everyday.

Great statistics! That is absolutely crazy there is that much money being spent on tobacco products. $157 billion dollars could be spent in a ton of other places instead of being spent on products that can kill you.

Today in our society most college students will engage in underage drinking before they are 21. I feel that students need to know the risk of consuming more acohol then they are suppose to. People should know that alcohol is the number one drug involved in rape. Our community is more worried in what people think of them if they do not induldge in these behaviors and I hope people know that it is ok if you do drink people just have to know there limits.

It is incredibly alarming when you go out on the weekend and you see people literally falling all over the place. I am always fearful that someone has alcohol poisoning and may need serious medical help. Living in a college town, you experience tons of crazy behaviors by your peers. Being in the health field, I am always so fearful of people engaging in things such as unprotected sex or other dangerous or risky behaviors. I feel that programs like alcoholedu is a great thing to have freshman participate in so they understand the many dangers that alcohol can cause. I think that we should also offer more programs to help express to people the multiple dangers that can stem from alcohol. Along with that, smoking is also another huge problem that many teens deal with. Finally being of age and being able to buy cigarettes puts the urge in people to start smoking. They don't realize what they are doing to themselves. Make sure you attend Kick Butts Day April 9th to help support the cause to stop smoking!!

I think that it is horrible that people still use tobacco products with all the studies and facts behind the effects tobacco has on people no matter there age. Alcohol I feel indifferent about Alcohol can be beneficial if used correctly. Both can be harmful and cause serious health conditions and I believe it up to that user to educate themselves on the proper ways to prevent any potential illnesses that could have been prevented.

I never understood why second hand smoke is just as bad as the peron smoking a cigarette. I would think that the rising on tobacco would make more people quit smoking.

I truly hate tobacco. I do not see why it's not illegal, especially seeing all of the stats.I almost feel the same way about alcohol. I think that our culture has put a stigma on liquor. I wonder if you did not have to be 21 to drink would it decrease binge drinking and take away from the alcoholism problem.
